Lockdown Procedures

Lockdown Procedures

Lockdown is a protective situation within the school building(s)/campus put into place when there is perceived danger/violence within the building(s) or in the immediate vicinity. Lockdown procedures are put into place to keep students and staff safe from internal or external danger.

Full Lockdown

Response Tone Verbal: “This is a Full lockdown”

Staff may need to make independent decisions if life safety is compromised (Run-Hide-Fight)

Alert the main office to report a perceived anger/threat through any available means so that lockdown notice can be announced.

Any staff member may call 9-911 if a threat is on campus. Call 9-911 or cell phone 911 – stay on the line to keep operator apprised of the situation.Remember, facts can be difficult to verify in the first moments of event.

  1. Move students in outdoor areas to indoors, if safe to do so
  2. Sweep all students into the nearest Classroom, Gym or Multi-purpose room
  3. Lock all doors
  4. Close all windows and blinds. Cover all exposed windows, if safe to do so
  5. Turn off lights and silence cell phones
  6. Instruct students to stay calm, quiet, low, and out of sight in safest location away from doors
  7. Do not use the telephone system once lockdown has been initiated.
  8. Ignore fire alarms and knocks on the door
  9. If safe to do so watch your email for messages from Command Station—Do not hit reply to these messages for accountability. DO ask questions or give status reports to this email—Example “I have a student who needs to go to bathroom.” Or “I see the bears outside my window”
  10. Send an email to the ‘Gatewood Office Staff’ distribution group. In the subject line write Green/Red/Medic:
    1. Green if all students are accounted for. If Para’s are present in your room, include their name in the title of the email (ex: Green – Jane Doe present)
    2. Red if you are missing student(s) or have extra students; write the missing/extra student name(s) in the body of the email
    3. Medic if there is an injury; write the student name(s) and injury in the body of the email
  11. Wait for law enforcement – law enforcement will assume lead when they arrive
  12. Do not open door for anyone – law enforcement or an administrator will come with a key when lockdown is over
  13. Follow law enforcement’s direction without question
  14. Inventory any injuries or other problems (panic, medical emergencies, intruders)
  15. Provide First Aid and calm and reassure upset students

Modified Lockdown

  2. Move students in outdoor areas to indoors, if safe to do so
  3. If necessary call 9-911 – stay on the line to keep operator apprised of the situation. Remember, facts may be difficult to verify in the first moments of an event. Any staff member may call 9-911 if a threat is on campus
  4. Lock all exterior doors
  5. Close all windows and blinds. Cover exposed windows
  6. Follow instructions from main office regarding allowable activities. Expect to continue with normal school procedures in classroom; academics are ongoing
  7. Watch your email for messages from Command Station—Do not hit reply to these messages for accountability. DO ask questions or give status reports to this email—Example “I have a student who needs to go to bathroom.” Or “I see the bears outside my window.”
  8. Send an email to the OH Office distribution group. In the subject line write Green/Red/Medic:
    1. Green if all students are accounted for. If Para’s are present in your room, include their name in the title of the email (ex: Green – Jane Doe present)
    2. Red if you are missing student(s) or have extra students; write the missing/extra student name(s) in the body of the email
    3. Medic if there is an injury, write the student name(s) and injury in the body of the email
  9. Para’s who are not already in a classroom, should attempt to enter the closest classroom. If in the Para Professional room, email ‘Gatewood Office Staff’ to indicate where you are
  10. Reassure students by keeping calm and continuing allowed activities
  11. Supervise student movements between rooms, limit hall traffic
  12. Do not open exterior doors for any reason until an “all clear” is received
  13. Communicate known threats, problems or needs to main office and remain alert for possible Full Lockdown
  14. Provide First Aid and use emergency supplies if necessary
  15. Wait for “all clear” signal or communication from main office or First Responders
