    Dear Gatewood Community,

I am writing to share some important information about changes regarding Gatewood’s procedures for morning dropoff and afternoon pick-up.

Our current procedures for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up do not align with the language in the teacher’s employment contract. As such, Gatewood worked together as a staff to develop new procedures that are both supportive to students and families and are in alignment with the teacher’s contractual language. Please read through the below information carefully, and reach out to either your child’s teacher, the front office, or me directly if you have any questions.

    Morning Transition

    • Starting on Feb. 26th, the procedure for students to transition into the school building from the playground will change in the following ways:
      • At 7:50am, all students will line up on their classroom number at the playground.
      • Starting at 7:51am, the Gatewood teachers on rotating duty will begin to dismiss classrooms in a regular rotation to enter the building through the cafeteria doors.
      • Teachers will provide supervision on the playground, in the cafeteria, and in the hallways while students transition in line from the playground to their classroom.
      • All students will be greeted at the door by their classroom teacher when they arrive to their classroom.

    Pick Up Transition

    • Starting on Feb. 26th, in order to expedite the “car pick-up” process, teachers will send students who are typically picked up by a car to the garden area to wait to be escorted to their vehicles by a staff member. Teachers will walk outside with their classes, and will come inside after most of the class is picked up (no later than 2:30pm).
    • Note: If you are picking your child up from school after 2:30pm, you will need to park your car and walk into the building’s front office to meet your child. The front office will not be allowed to send students out to the parking lot without their parent present to escort them.

Please know that we will be introducing our new procedures to students over the next two weeks, and will officially start both procedures on Feb. 26th, the day after Mid-Winter break.

I am confident that these changes to our procedures will continue to provide the needed supports to our students during the morning and afternoon transitions, and will also bring our procedures into alignment with our contractual obligations.

As always, if you are interested in volunteering at Gatewood during either the morning or afternoon transition, we would welcome your support in additional supervision! Please connect with us at the front office if you are interested in supporting us in this way.

    Thank you,
    Kyna Hogg
