Gatewood Science Fair

Gatewood STEM Fair Palooza 2017

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Fair Palooza will be on Thursday 4/6.

Students in grades 2-5 are encouraged to submit a self-directed project that will be exhibited to school audiences in the afternoon, and to parents and other family members in the evening.

Hands-on scientific investigation, engineering, and invention are the focus for the fair.  Over a six week period students will design, test, analyze and present a project that uses the scientific method.

4th and 5th graders are asked to link their experiment to something that has an application in the ‘environment’ or connects to ‘climate change’.
Examples:

  • If doing an ‘exploding volcano’ experiment, they could write a paragraph about ocean acidification
  • An experiment looking at the different growth rates of pea plants (from seed) could be linked to ecological environment or climate change.

Please note that, for the most part, the work for the project will be done at home. Students will be given some guidance at school and teachers will check in with them periodically. The majority of work should be self-directed and done outside of class time. Parents are encouraged to offer emotional support and reminders, but to allow students to do the projects by themselves.

New This Year! The Palooza Team will be available in the 3rd Floor Computer Lab after school on Tuesday 3/14 - Pi pi Day! -  to assist any students that need help researching and identifying project ideas, setting up a plan for getting the materials, and even help with planning the experiment. If needed, another after school session may be scheduled.

To start the processes, students must return the Registration Form to their science teacher by Tuesday 3/7.

Parents/Guardians and science teachers must sign off on all projects. The trifold and exhibits can be brought in on the day of the big event on Thursday 4/6.

Keep watching the Gatewood Community Facebook Page, Gatewood PTA Volunteer Site, Gatewood School Site, and the weekly NAVIGATOR Newsletter for updated information!

Thank you in advance for your support as we celebrate science, technology and engineering exploration together.
